Today Specialized continued their slow invasion into sports tech gadgetry with the introduction of the Specialized

Today Specialized continued their slow invasion into sports tech gadgetry with the introduction of the Specialized ANGi standalone pod and fully pod-equipped helmet lineup. These connected helmet pods alert your friends and family when you crash, but also give those folks a tracking link for your entire ride (and even alert when you don’t come home on time).  Oh, and Specialized quietly acquired ICEdot (the company) a year ago and managed to keep it under wraps. Another oh – the company (Specialized) is building out a ride meeting/organizing app that should probably give companies like Strava pause for thought. But more on that in a moment. First up is the helmets and sensors, which I’ve gotten a couple of rides in already – but will wait a few months before doing a complete review on it (so I can find out if I get false positives or worse, real positives). However, in the meantime, here’s this first look at things. The video below is notable as I show how the crash detection bits work in real-time: Though, if you want all the textual details, then read on! Note that in case you’re just reading this intro bit while deciding whether to read everything else: The standalone pod is ...

IndyCar to use Red Bull’s Aeroscreen and Halo-style device from 2020

IndyCar will introduce a new version of Red Bull’s Aeroscreen, which was originally developed for use in Formula 1, in 2020. “Since the first prototypes were developed and demonstrated in 2016, the potential of Aeroscreen to improve the safety for drivers in the event of frontal impacts in the cockpit area of cars has been clear,” said Red Bull team principal Christian Horner, who is also CEO of Red Bull Advanced Technologies. “This new partnership with IndyCar gives us at Red Bull Advanced Technologies the go-ahead to fully explore that potential, and to deliver a protection system that will help prevent serious injuries and potentially save lives in the US’s premier single-seater series. Laser Printing: Low-cost, high-speed laser printing meets requirements for consumer products and industrial parts

A pulsed nanosecond MOPA laser, combined with a high-speed polygon scan head, matches printing rates for in-line and on-demand production without consumables such as ink. Manufacturers have generally acknowledged that package printing is an area to target for cost reduction because it provides both customer product variation and production tracking, whether using paper labels or directly onto the plastic or metallic containers. To meet this manufacturing challenge, we conducted a test study to validate the use of a new generation of high-speed pulse on demand (POD) master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) lasers in concert with high-speed polygon scan heads. The results address the requirements from manufacturers of both consumer product goods (CPG) and industrial goods for in-line and on-demand printing with an acceptable cost and return on investment (ROI). The targets that we investigated included direct printing onto plastics, paper, and cardboard, as well as printing on labels. Potential market segments for this printing include consumer products, medical and pharmaceutical products, universal ID (UID) packaging, and industrial products. The associated costs targeted for e...
