In a two-week Pedestal Spotlight Show from June 29 to July 15, the Yaquina Art Association will be featuring the jewelry of Linda Cline. The Yaquina Art Association Gallery is located at 789 NW Beach Drive in Newport’s historic Nye Beach district. Hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day.  “I live in an amazing place, Newport, Oregon, where every day I have the privilege of watching the ocean glisten, sparkle and change into many colors,” said Cline. “The variety of colors in nature is the canvas whereby I create sparkling jewelry.” Originally from Southern California and a having career as an English as a second language instructor at the University of California Riverside, creating and crafting beaded jewelry was not something Cline envisioned becoming a second career for her. “But here I am 18 years later, still crafting beautiful beaded necklaces, bracelets, earrings and such,” she said. “Moreover, it is still a passion for me.” Cline basically taught herself, and she says she is still learning and experimenting with different gemstones, Swarovski Crystals and other glass beads. “My predominant finding is sterling silver, but I do use 14k gold, pewter, brass and co...

First Look: Genesis Tarn Keeping It Real With UK Steel

Made from steel, the Genesis Tarn is a dedicated 27.5 Plus bike for riders wanting the spring of steel, the boing of chunky rubber and the confidence and stability a modern geometry offers. We’re not sure how the bods at Genesis went about developing the Tarn 20 but it’s clear to us that they managed to get their hands on a checklist for someones dream steel hardtail and went to town. Versatility seems to the name of the game with the Tarn 20. Dual bottle bosses clearly point to a bike that you’re going to spend many many hours on, and with plenty of room on the slender frame to fit luggage, we can picture the Tarn 20 being the perfect choice for a spot of winter bike-packing. That said, the long, low, sloping top tube does have an aggressive look to it, and with pretty sorted geometry we wouldn’t mind getting a little rowdy on the Tarn 20 too. The Tarn 20 is built around a two-tone black frame with gold details. The material isn’t just basic steel, but Genesis Mjölnir seamless double-butted cromoly tubing. Those words were actually really satisfying to type and bring back thoughts of classic skinny frames from the early 90’s, not that the Tarn 20 is anything like those bikes of...

Cork vs. Cap: Which Wine Stopper Is Better? | Earth911.com Cork vs. Cap: Which Wine Stopper Is Better?

Biodynamic, organic and Napa Green certified, planet-healthy wines are widely available. But what about the packaging? Today we pop (or uncap) the question of wine stoppers. Wine drinkers are divided over whether it’s better to cork a bottle of wine or cap it. But there are several types of cork, each with different performance and environmental impacts, and screw caps are not the only alternative to cork. The classic natural cork wine stopper is the first that comes to mind. But there are also granulated corks made of leftover granules from the natural cork manufacturing process. Technical corks are made from a combination natural and granulated cork. Synthetic corks can be made from any number of materials, such as rubber, plastic, and even bioplastic. You might remember Steve Martin asking Kermit the Frog if he would like to smell the bottle cap in The Muppet Movie. Many servers now “hold the cap and turn the bottle,” but the association of screw caps with low quality wine has been hard to shake, even though corks and screw caps are both available at every price point.   Many winemakers hold that the tighter seal of screw caps is preferable for preserving young wines, while ...

The new garden shovel designs hold plants and soil easier, and can turn into compact wall-hung forms. The new garden shovel designs hold plants and soil easier, and can turn into compact wall-hung forms. Garden tools may look plain despite being ergonomic and durable but this won’t be the case soon. A designer, HaYoung Lee, has just made the common garden tool innovative and eye-catching. Lee’s garden tool designs, three new hand shovels, are inspired by Hyundai’s car grilles. One design has a number of gratings and can be used as a rake, while another has one big gap that grips the plant by the body or root-soil system when transported. The third does not have a grille but is a wide scoop for carrying more soil. Designs look sleek as real car grilles. What’s equally attention-grabbing about the designs is that they have unlockable handles that can be pushed inward. Transformed into compact tools, the shovels can be hung on walls via its string attachments. They can blend into modern interior design. The handles ar...

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s royal engagement has given us so much inspiration already: designers have

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s royal engagement has given us so much inspiration already: designers have created sketches of their vision for her dress, speculation has begun about the star-studded guest list, and one nail polish brand created a line of royal shades. Now, bartenders at Kimpton restaurants across the country have dreamed up five cocktails to celebrate the royal engagement! All five cocktails have flavor profiles that will make you feel royal at first sip. We’re still in the early weeks of the royal engagement, so it’s unclear what the food and drink situation will be like at the televised celebration, but for now we’ll be drinking these with our pinkies in the air, waiting for Meghan Markle to strut down the aisle toward her real-life prince! “Suitable for a princess indeed! This royal engagement-inspired cocktail features crème de violette, created from two distinct flower breeds, including the (aptly named) luminous ‘Queen Charlotte’ blossom. Chamomile syrup gives a nod to the British love for tea, and when served in a gorgeous teacup and saucer, induces a royal vibe to all who sip.”—Outlier in Seattle “Inspired by th...

IMTS 2018 Metalcutting Highlights Showcase Digital Connections

Advanced Manufacturing Media is a leading source for news and in-depth technical information about advanced manufacturing in North America. Metalcutting Exhibitors at IMTS 2018 did not disappoint, nor were they disappointed with results from the largest version of the biennial event in terms of number of exhibitors, attendees and, more important, attendee leads. If IMTS expositions of the recent past had introduced a standard for digital connection (MTConnect IMTS 2014) and piggybacked on the notion of Industry 4.0 (also known as) IIoT, IoT IMTS 2016), metalcutting exhibitors of all stripes demonstrated how software can shape their metal-removing behemoths to a new digital reality. Data collection is only the beginning. Analysis and dissemination of that information within organizations, between suppliers and their customers is where the gold is going to be found and it’ll be found in the healthy mix of new machine technology and the means to provide connectivity on display at IMTS 2018. Starrag and Haimer held a joint technical conference on Sunday before IMTS opened, a first of its kind for both companies. Dr. Christian Walti, Starrag CEO and head of regional sales detailed h...
