CAMX 2019 exhibit preview: Diversified Machine Systems : CompositesWorld

Diversified Machine Systems (DMS; Colorado Springs, Colo., U.S.) is showcasing its 5-axis CNC machining capabilities at CAMX 2019. DMS says its machines are known for their durability and repeatability, and that all of its 5-axis machines feature a stress-relieved steel frame that is fabricated and assembled in-house. DMS’s 5-axis Enclosed Overhead Gantry CNC machine is a heavy-duty machine that can be used to process a variety of applications and materials, including composites. This model is available in either a solid roof or a retractable “clamshell-style” roof that is designed for easier access and more efficient loading and unloading of materials.  The 5-axis Enclosed Dual Cell Moving Table CNC Machine is designed to be a continuous-use, medium to heavy-duty series of machines, available in a range of sizes and styles. The 5-axis Enclosed Dual Cell Moving Table CNC router is designed for use with honeycomb, composites, carbon fiber or aluminum. The enclosed design keeps debris inside, making it suited particularly for fine materials such as foam or carbon fiber. The twin moving table design pairs with DMS’ quick-change fixture system, enabling a single operator to switch b...

“Don’t move,” I texted him: A Salon After Dark read

Don’t move, I texted him. That seemed like a good place to start. I could imagine it, too: Julian sitting in bed clutching his cell phone, the early stirrings of an erection straining at his boxer briefs. I hadn’t seen his apartment yet but I already suspected it was gorgeous, a small but beautiful one-bedroom in a historic Georgetown brownstone. Just him all alone in that square footage, idly playing with his dick as he waited for me to reply. Or maybe he was at some bar with colleagues, sneaking glances at his phone while they discussed the markets. I had no way of knowing and it sent a shiver through my forearms, nerves tightening with thrill. It was easy to picture that, too: him standing in some cluster of finance bros dressed up in light summer suits and loosened ties. They’d have no idea what he was thinking, what he wanted me to do to him. Those preppy motherfuckers with their yields and dividends and all that terminology I couldn’t remember from my Econ 101 course taken eight million years ago. One Month at a Time: Lumbering to Big Timber to learn about brewing | One Month At A Time

Introductory offer for 99¢ per month during the first three months and then the monthly rate will increase to $3.99 per month for 2 months, then the rate changes to $7.99 for two months until a final rate of $13.95 a month. Reporter Bill Lynch takes a field trip to Big Timber Brewing Company in Elkins to learn the difference between brewing beer and distilling whiskey — at least, that’s what he said he was doing. The foam is created by enzymes in the beer that are discharged along with CO2 during the beer brewing process. It’s apparently harmless, but weird looking. Foam bubbled up out of the five-gallon bucket. I kept expecting whatever was coming out of the plastic hose to top off the container and then spill out onto the concrete floor, maybe take on a life of its own and attack, but there were only just more bubbles. In the 1955 short story Autofac, Philip K. Dick envisioned a world dominated by self-replicating robots

In the 1955 short story Autofac, Philip K. Dick envisioned a world dominated by self-replicating robots who work incessantly, monopolising and eventually depleting the planet’s resources. Autofac is a dystopian take on what is already happening in some manufacturing facilities, where robots work 24/7 with little to no human supervision. Here Sophie Hand, UK country manager at automation parts supplier EU Automation, explains the potential of lights-out manufacturing.  Like the autofacs in Philip K. Dick’s story, state-of-the-art robots at several plants can now work in total autonomy for extended periods of time, a production mode known as lights-out manufacturing. Although expensive to set up, lights-out manufacturing comes with a series of advantages, the first of which is increased profitability. Generally, robots work more slowly but more consistently than humans, since they don’t get tired, bored, distracted or sick. As a result, autonomous robots can help manufacturers maximise productivity to meet increased demand. Additionally, lights-out manufacturing enables businesses to save on energy and operational costs. A fully automated factory can indeed run ‘with the lights ou...

The New Pho Lang Thang Near Findlay Market Features More Seating, Less Cooking Fumes, Plus Craft Cocktails

The new space is stunning, and such an upgrade from the original Pho Lang Thang that you feel like you’re almost in a different universe Although Cincinnati is home to several thousand citizens of Vietnamese descent, there are only a few eateries here representing that country’s cuisine. Each one is casual, serving what could easily be considered street food. That makes a lot of sense given that the charm of Vietnamese food lies in its freshness and simplicity.  You don’t need a white tablecloth to appreciate salads, noodle bowls and sandwiches flavored with fish sauce, shrimp paste, bean sauce and piles of fresh herbs — the characteristic ingredients of the cuisine. But to make this food stand out from all the other options in the restaurant universe, you must build upon those simple dishes with crisp vegetables, deeply flavored broths, just-picked herbs and the best-available proteins, be that meat, seafood or tofu.   We can thank brothers Bao and Duy Nguyen for providing what is probably the area’s best Vietnamese food. Along with business partners and comrades-in-arms, they have operated Pho Lang Thang in Findlay Market since 2011 and opened Quan Hapa on Vine Street a couple...

UAE: High gold rates no deterrant for Indian festive shoppers | Uae

Dubai: From ever since she can remember, Sarika Kadam, a housewife in Dubai, has been purchasing gold ahead of Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. This year, with Dhanteras, the first day of the five-day festivities falling on Friday, she picked up an eight gram gold coin from Malabar Gold & Jewellery for her eight-year-old granddaughter. “It’s a tradition I have been following since long. Even when I was a child, my mother would buy me gold. Over the years, I would get some jewellery for myself. But now I buy coins for my granddaughter,” the 63-year-old told Gulf News. Malini Shekhar, another customer who shares the same sentiments, is particular that she makes the purchase on Dhanteras itself. She added, “I’ve seen a beautiful gold set with emerald and ruby which I will buy on Friday. In addition, I will be getting a silver coin ingrained with the figures of Ganesh and Lakshmi (Indian deities of auspiciousness and wealth) and a stainless steel item for the kitchen. Reason: they will set the tone for a year filled with fruitful work, good health, wealth and peace.” Call it faith, symbolism or both, many UAE-based Hindus like Sarika and Malini are also making a beeline to ...

Synopsis: Installing a tank water heater might seem easy, but homeowners who refinish their basements often

Synopsis: Installing a tank water heater might seem easy, but homeowners who refinish their basements often create a number of code violations with respect to the water heater. Code expert Glenn Mathewson describes 10 common water-heater code issues, including confusion about drip pans and drains, unsupported expansion tanks and plastic vents, lack of combustion air, and more. Some of these violations can be life-safety hazards, so avoiding these mistakes is crucial. In the minds of many, installing a tank water heater is a piece of cake—an “I can’t believe I need a building permit to do this” kind of thing. These are the people who usually fail inspection. Indeed, a water heater can be easy to install, but replacing one in an existing home can introduce a host of complications. Some of this stems from the norms of the American home-building industry. Basements in new homes are usually left unfinished and pitched to buyers as a project they can easily tackle themselves when they need more living space. That day comes, and they go for it— frequently without a permit— unwittingly creating a number of code violations with respect to the water heater. One common mistake: boxing the ...

Ford built an electric Mustang with a manual transmission. And we’re mad.

Ford wants the world to take notice of its plans for electric vehicles. And what better way than to build an all-electric Mustang fastback with a six-speed manual transmission? And that has us angry over here because it’s a gigantic tease of a prototype that will never make it into production. Or least that’s what Ford is saying. Ford and Webasto revealed Tuesday the “Mustang Lithium” high-performance battery electric vehicle at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) trade show in Las Vegas. The vehicle is a one-off, meaning this won’t hit the marketplace anytime soon, if ever. Ford does say this electrified Mustang is more than just a prototype. It’s also a testbed for battery and thermal management technologies Webasto and Ford are creating for the growing e-mobility automotive segment. So maybe there is a chance? The vehicle has a Phi-Power dual-core electric motor and dual power inverters powered by an 800-volt Webasto battery system. The package produces 900 horsepower and 1,000 pound-feet of torque, ensuring its muscle car status. The vehicle has custom carbon fiber body components, a 1.0-inch lowered stance and 20-inch staggered fitting forged wheels, accordin...
