Nanticoke Planters retiree revels in Mr. Peanut lore

David Reese recalls decades working for company, celebrated through a family passion for memorabilia collecting David Reese stands next to a vintage Mr. Peanut costume worn by his daughter, Cheryl Reese. The costume is part of Cheryl Reese’s large collection of Planters Peanuts memorabilia. David Reese started working for Planters in Wilkes-Barre in 1959 and stayed for 30 years under multiple owners. Both father and daughter collect items related to the history of the brand. The former Planters headquarters on South Main Street, Wilkes-Barre, is seen in a 1970s photo. David Reese remembers the place well — that is his 1972 Chevy Caprice in the lot. Only the smaller administration building still stands today. Mr. Peanut has been represented on a range of products over the years, from cups like this to salt and pepper shakers, matches, lapel pins, ties, posters and more. Reese worked for Planters Peanuts in Wilkes-Barre and its successors for decades. He and daughter Cheryl both collect Planters memorabilia, especially anything having to do with the famed peanut mascot with his signature top hat, monocle and cane. So they were shocked and saddened last week to learn that Planters ...

New class of crosslinker-free nanofiber biomaterials from Hydra nematocyst proteins

Nematocysts are stinging organelles of cnidarians that have remarkable mechanical properties to undergo 50 percent volume changes during explosive exocytosis (process by which cells excrete waste and large molecules), while withstanding osmotic pressures beyond 100 bar. Researchers had recently identified two novel protein components that built up the nematocyst wall in Hydra to include (1) a cnidarian proline-rich protein-1 (CPP-1) with a rigid polyproline motif, and (2) an elastic Cnidoin possessing a silk-like domain. In a new study, now on Scientific Reports, Theresa Bentele and a team of researchers in the departments of Medicine, Molecular Evolution and Genomics and the Institute of Physical Chemistry in Germany, Australia and Japan, expressed recombinant Cnidoin and CPP-1 proteins in Escherichia coli. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-1449240174198-2′); }); They compared the elastic modulus of spontaneously crosslinked bulk proteins with that of isolated nematocysts. The researchers systematically optimized the fabrication of uniform protein nanofibers using electrospinning and preparative conditions. Both fibers remained stable eve...

While we’re definitely not here to say that only one gender can use certain beauty products

While we’re definitely not here to say that only one gender can use certain beauty products — and we’re certainly not here for the pink tax — we decided to take a peek into which items were earning top marks from male shoppers and which things found when searching the section marked “men” got the most stars. (Spoiler: several of these reviewers came out and said they were women before explaining why they love the product, so it’s not just us.) There are products for shaving (that could help with waxing side effects, too) along with multitasking options that combine two — or three! — separate things into one, helping anyone who wants to reduce the total number of bottles, jars, and tubes stocked in a bathroom. Check out the top-rated products we located in the men’s category at Sephora from skin care to hair care below. What Is Functional Fitness and What Exercises Does Functional Training Include?

Gabrielle Kassel is a New York-based wellness and sex writer and CrossFit Level 1 Trainer. She’s become a morning person, tried the Whole30 challenge, and eaten, drank, brushed with, scrubbed with, and bathed with charcoal — all in the name of journalism. In addition to Livestrong, her work has appeared on Well & Good, Health, Shape, Women’s Health, Greatist, and more. In her free time, Gabrielle can be found reading romance novels, bench-pressing, or yep, pole dancing. An overused marketing ploy in the world of fitness, the phrase “functional fitness” may be a bit of a buzzword. But quit your eye-roll. Because not only is it a legitimate type of exercise, it’s arguably the best type. “Functional fitness exercises mimic movement patterns that you do in everyday life,” says Ian Elwood, CSCS, CF-1, founder of Mission MVNT. Think: Sitting down to the toilet, lifting a package from the front steps, putting the detergent back on the top shelf or stepping into the shower. There are a million different exercises that might be considered functional, but they all fall into one of six categories: squat, hinge, lunge, push, pull, and rotate. “I...

Thailand’s plastic bag ban is an overdue step towards pragmatism

Thailand recently took an important step towards environmental protection when 75 leading retailers stopped issuing plastic bags to shoppers. This step continues a campaign started by environmentalists and local governments in Thailand to reduce urban waste and pollution. The long-term plan is to ban all single-use plastics by 2021. Thai newspapers have shown customers responding in good faith to the ban. Many are taking wheelbarrows and buckets to supermarkets, and others are re-using sacks made for transporting sugar and rice. But critics ask why it has taken so long. The first bans of lightweight plastic bags took place in Bangladesh and India in 2002. China banned lightweight bags in 2008. And Thailand’s role in producing plastic waste has been known for years. A recent article in Science shows that, in terms of national averages, Thailand is the world’s 6th largest dumper of plastic. Adjusting these figures for coastal populations and coral reefs, Thailand leads the world. According to the article, Thais and visitors to Thailand will — knowingly or otherwise — throw some 8.9 million plastic items into sewers and canals by 2025, resulting in more than half a million tonnes o...

To check if you need to bleed a radiator, run your hands over it when the central heating is on, being careful not to burn your hands. If the radiator is cooler at the top than the bottom, chances are air has built up inside which means that the hot water can not heat the whole radiator. Wait until your radiators have fully cooled before starting to bleed them. This is important as otherwise steam and boiling water may escape when the valve is released and will be dangerous. To locate the valve, check the top edge of the radiator – the release valve looks like a small, square pin. A double radiator will have a valve on each panel and you will need to bleed both. Universal radiators can also have a valve on the back panel, so be sure to check for this. Before releasing the trapped air, protect the surrounding area using old cloths or towels and a bowl to catch any escaping water. Place the radiator key into the release valve and carefully twist it one or two times anti-clockwise. You’ll hear a hiss as the trapped air is released, which will take a few seconds. Once you hear a gurgling sound or water begins to come out, you’ll need to twist the key clockwise to close the valve, be...

The closing decade was an ever-shifting parade of fashion

NEW YORK — Lady Gaga wore meat and Rihanna went naked, practically. Kate Middleton delivered royal wedding opulence and Billy Porter went viral in a tuxedo gown. There was the much-coveted Olivia Pope white coat, Lupita Nyong’o’s perfect powder blue Oscar gown and Karl Lagerfield’s embrace of athleisure. The closing decade was ever-shifting in fashion. The most special moments among fashion editors had Rihanna and Beyonce top of mind as trendsetters, along with the Duchess of Cambridge, the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, and former first lady Michelle Obama. Rachel Torgerson, senior fashion editor at Cosmopolitan, said it might seem easy to overlook the decade of 2010 to 2020 fashion-wise. Lady Gaga’s raw meat dress in 2010 at the MTV Video Music Awards was a much talked about exception. “More definitive moments came before — the grunge-y ’90s, the Paris Hilton-drenched early aughts,” Torgerson said. “But the truth is there were some majorly iconic sartorial instances that changed us forever during this time.” “My jaw dropped to the floor when Rihanna sparkled onto the stage in an Adam Selman Swarovksi crystal ‘naked dress’ to receive her CFDA style icon award,” said Joyann K...
